Re. the New CAP Online Safety Briefing
Some questions have been asked about the new Online Safety Briefing. I will try to answer as best I can. Capt. Hagberg may have more to add during the next meeting.
CAP emphasizes safety in order to protect personnel, property, and mission capability. Recalling statistics I learned when I took SLS, most accidents involving CAP Senior members are experienced by those who had completed only CAP Level I training. As training increased, preventable accidents decreased. Especially considering our work with young people, and our Emergency Services mission, senior members should seek to be as well trained as possible. We can expect CAP to continue to emphasize safety. Incidentally, according to data supplied at the last Wing Commander's Call, the average for Senior members in the Pennsylvania Wing who have completed Level II is nearly fifteen times higher than the national average. All Cadets pledge to advance their training and education rapidly, which naturally includes safety training.
Clarification: Members who are not compliant with monthly safety briefings will be automatically suspended from participating in CAP activities by the CAP NHQ electronic record keeping system until they become compliant. The mandatory "face-to-face" safety briefing referred to in the NERPA505 Update, 25 Apr 10, has to be completed quarterly and entered into each member's training record or the CAP NHQ system will automatically suspend non-compliant members from participating in CAP activities until compliant.
Instructions for completing the Online Safety Briefing: (1) log on to your eServices account; (2) select the "Online Safety Briefing" link near the left, bottom of your start page; (3) on the next page, under "Briefing Name", select the link "Introduction to CAP Safety Program for New Members"; (4) view the slide presentation (about 25 slides); (5) take the 11 question exam (questions are randomly selected from a pool, so exams will be a little different for each member); (6) when finished, select "Submit Test Results". (7) The next page will show your score. 80% is passing. Although you may get a higher score, only 80% will show up in your eServices record.
Note that you may have to change some of your browser's security settings if you experience problems viewing the slides. If you have "scripts" blocked, you will have to allow them in order to view the material. If you can view the slides, you should be able to view the exam.

NERPA505 Update
Greetings, 505! Congratulations are again in order for two of our cadets! Daniel Hagberg and Collin Matheny have completed requirements for the Captain Eddie Rickenbacker Achievement and promotion to C/TSgt.
IMPORTANT SAFETY UPDATE: Near the bottom of the left column of your eServices start page, you will find a new link entitled "Online Safety Briefing." Every member, Senior and Cadet needs to select the link and take the introductory safety course as soon as possible. I have taken the course, and found that it covers familiar material, and can be taken in about fifteen minutes. The online grading system will let you know if you have passed, and will inform you of the date before which you need to briefed again. The Online Safety Briefing does not replace briefings at meetings, but members who miss squadron briefings can stay current by taking the online version. Every member, Senior and Cadet, must attend a minimum of one "face-to-face" safety briefing per quarter to be authorized to participate in CAP activities. Members who are not current on safety briefings cannot participate in CAP activities until they become current. If you have any questions, contact Capt. Hagberg, or Ch. Matheny.
(1) Group Six Commander's Call is planned for 1 May, 09:30 hrs, at the National Guard armory, Hermitage, PA.
(2) Tuesday is Aerospace Education emphasis night. Pending the availability of the testing officer, we will plan to test after a brief review the Redstone material. We will also plan to cover an aerospace module. The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(3) Re. Flight Commander C/2 Lt. Matheny: mentors need to be prepared to spend thirty minutes with those they are mentoring to monitor their progress and offer encouragement.
(4) Thanks to Anita Cohan for spending considerable time with the squadron last Tuesday evening! She plans to write a feature article on 505 for "Pennlines", the publication for our rural electric cooperative. Thanks, as well, to SM Alan Fuller for arranging her visit!

NERPA505 Update
Congratulations to Cadet Airman Basic Austin Confer for becoming the newest member of the squadron! C/AB Confer received his CAP ID number on 14 Apr. Welcome to 505, Austin!
(1) C/2 Lt. Matheny, C/SSgt. Hagberg, C/SSgt Matheny, and C/Amn. Natalie Peterson posted the Colors for the annual Warren Co. Republican Dinner on 16 Apr. They made a good impression and received many compliments from the attendees. They represented the squadron well. Great job, cadets!
(2) C/2 Lt. Matheny, C/SSgt. Hagberg, C/SSgt. Matheny, and C/Amn Johnson attended the third annual Cadet Conference and Banquet at FTIG on Saturday, 17 Apr. They will report on the their experience and share what they learned with the squadron on Tuesday evening. Capt. Hagberg and Ch. Matheny attended Wing Commander's Call while the cadets were in conference. Capt Hagberg will update the squadron on important developments. Ch. Matheny, as unit PDO, will brief senior members on important Professional Development information.
(3) Are you ready to test on Leadership or Aerospace on Tuesday night? It's great to get our testing program back on track. Every cadet, with the exception of C/SSgt. Hagberg, who needs to be tested only in drill for his next achievement, should be ready for at least one test. Testing will also be offered for the Redstone level of the Model Rocketry program for those who attended the class. Thanks to SM Alan Fuller for assuming responsibility as assistant Testing Officer. Maj. Brown will assume duty as primary TO as soon as his application is processed and he completes senior member Level I training.
(4) Pending time available, since this is a special testing night, C/2 Lt. Matheny says that cadets should also plan for PT and drill practice. The uniform of the day is BDUs. Please bring appropriate clothing to change into for PT.
(5) Just a brief uniform reminder: Cadets who attend organized CAP activities need to be in proper uniform, unless otherwise directed by the commander. Senior members need to be in uniform only while working with cadets, which means they need to be in uniform when participating in organized activities involving cadets. The exception is cadet sponsor members, who do not wear a CAP uniform, but must wear an approved name tag designated "Sponsor." If anyone has any questions, do not hesitate to ask! Your mentor and your chain of command are here to help. Every cadet should have a mentor. If you do not know who it is, ask C/2 Lt. Matheny. Ch. Matheny is the initial mentor for senior members as Prof. Development Officer. Capt. Hagberg also mentors as Squadron Commander. As other senior members advance, they will become mentors as well. NERPA505 Update
Greetings, 505! I hope everyone had a great weekend.
(1) Tuesday is Character Development emphasis. The uniform of the day is Class B for cadets, and Class B or Corporate uniform for senior members. Cadets need to attend a minimum of one Character Development class per achievement. Don't forget to bring your Flight Logs! We will also plan to study an Aerospace or Leadership module, time permitting.
(2) SM Alan Fuller has agreed to serve as interim Testing Officer. He will offer testing on Tuesday, 20 Apr. Every cadet needs to be ready to test on either Leadership, Aerospace, or both. The Redstone rocketry test will also be offered to those who have attended the class portion of the training.
(3) C/2 Lt. Matheny states the Color Guard should plan to practice posting the Colors to prepare for the Warren County Republican Dinner on 16 Apr. Thanks to Capt. Hagberg for arranging the opportunity for service.
(4) Registrations have been submitted for two senior members and four cadets to attend the Wing Commander's Call and the Cadet Conference on 17 Apr. We still plan to leave for FTIG immediately after posting the Colors at the Republican dinner.
U.S. Navy Seaman Jon Durnell sends his regards to 505! He plans to come home on leave in mid May, and plans to visit the squadron.

Current events: (select link) "Lapses hinder rescue teams hunting lost planes" Hopefully, the improved information flow suggested by the story will will also improve SAR efforts. We must never forget how important what we do in CAP is to others.
(1) Tuesday is Safety Briefing and testing day. Since we have not been able to replace our testing officer yet, we will take practice quizzes instead. The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) Cadets and senior members who are mentoring others should plan to take fifteen or twenty minutes to review progress and offer encouragement.
(3) "Thank"s to C/2 Lt. Matheny, C/SSgt. Hagberg, and C/SSgt. Matheny for spending four hours at Wal-Mart on a beautiful Thursday afternoon raising funds for the squadron. They represented the squadron well and drew a lot of comments and compliments from passers by.
(4) Cadets who plan to attend the Cadet Conference on 17 April need to register now. The registration deadline is 7 Apr., after which Wing HQ said they will accept no more registrations. I hope as many cadets as possible can attend. The link to register online is http://pawgcadetprograms.webs.com/. Receipts must be presented at conference registration. It is wise to carry copies of your registration form and CAPF 60 to registration in the event of a red tape snarl up. Please inform Ch. Matheny or Captain Hagberg on Tuesday if you plan to attend so hotel reservations can be made. We still plan to leave for FTIG on Friday, 16 Apr., after the Color Guard posts the colors at the Republican Dinner.
