Special 505 Update

For those of you who were not at tonight's meeting, We announced that our Color Guard won the "Best marching Unit" award at the Russell Jubilee for the second year in a row!  Congratulations to all the members of our Cadet Color Guard!  C/CMSgt Evan Matheny, C/A1C Daniel Hagberg, C/A1C Collin Matheny and C/A1C Jason Peterson marched in the parade.  They were assisted along the route by C/Amn Blake Montour and some of our squadron's family members.

Our Color Guard will march again this Saturday in the Warren 4th of July parade.  We are in need of a few helpers to walk along the parade route to distribute treats and literature to those who request information.  If you can help, please let me know.

NERPA505 Update

Hello, 505!  I hope everyone had a great weekend!  C/CMSgt Matheny is home from Cadet Basic Encampment no worse for the wear.  He has a lot of great information to share with us.  C/A1C Peterson is still planning to attend Hawk Mountain Ranger School this summer.  We look forward to hearng about his experience, too!

Is your membership up for renewal?  If you do not know, check the date on your CAP ID card.  Please do not allow your membership to lapse!

(1) By order of the Commander, Capr. Hagberg, the uniform of the day for the Color Guard this Tuesday is Class B blues.  Plan to practice for the upcoming 4th of July parade. Others may wear BDUs or alternate senior uniforms.  We need a few cadets and parents to volunteer to walk the parade route to help distribute treats and literature.
(2) This is a 5th Tuesday, so we will plan to work on at least one Emergency Services item as we continue to prepare our ground search and rescue abilities.  Since we are not a flying squadron, a good ground team is the logical point of emphasis for the Emergency Services part of the three-fold CAP mission of Aerospace Education, Cadet Programs and Emergency Services.
(3) With summer here and school out, all of us need to be vigilant not to become careless in our study, training and safety.  All of us, seniors and cadets, should try to block out a set amount of time (try for at leas an hour) each week to work on professional development.  Last summer testing and promotions slowed to a trickle.  Lets try to keep that from happening this summer.
(4) Lets each try to invite at least one new person to every meeting.  They may decide not to come, but they will not even think about it if they are never asked.  Our squadron is at the minimum of 16 members now.  We need to try to reach at least 20 members over the summer months, if possible.  Talk it up!  Let everyone know how exciting it is to be part of the CAP/USAF Auxiliary team!  Parents, if you are not interested in joing CAP as a senior member, please consider joining as a Cadet Sponsor Member.  The dues for Sponsor Members are reduced, they may wear the corporate uniform (but not USAF uniforms), they can qualify for a CAP driver's license to drive CAP vehicles, and they can work with CAP cadets other than your own children during meetings, fund raising events, and other occasions.  You can give as much or as little time as you have available.  Please give it some thought!

Semper Vigilans!  See yout Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Hello 505!  I hope everyone had a fun and safe weekend.  Today's update will be brief.

(1) Tuesday is Emergency Services emphasis night.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.  Lt. Orris and/or Capt. Hagberg will choose the topic and instruct the class.
(2) Plan ahead for the Warren 4th of July parade.  We need as many participants a possible.
(3) IMPORTANT: All members who plan to come into contact with CAP aircraft, including cadets up for O-rides, need to view the Aircraft Ground Handling video and take the brief quiz afterward.  "This training is available on CAP eServices under the CAP Utilities, CAP Multimedia, then select video courses.   Members who complete the training online will have it automatically recorded in Operations Qualifications."  I will download a copy to show to those who do not have a high speed Internet connection during a squadron meeting.
(4) Neither C/CMSgt Matheny, C/A1C Matheny, nor I will be at the meeting Tuesday night due to our particiaption in Vacation Bible School at our church.  I am always available by phone or email if I am needed.  C/MSgt Matheny will not be at the meeting next week because he will be attending the PA Wing Cadet Basic Encampment.

Sepmer Vigilans!
  See you next Tuesday!

Congratulations to C/SSgt Farrell!

C/SSgt. Dillon Farrell received a citation from Rep. Kathy Rapp's office on June 9, on behalf of the Pennsylvania legislature, recognizing his achievement of the Wright Brothers Award. Achieving the Wright Brothers award includes active involvement in squadron activities, demonstrated growth in military customs and courtesies, military drill, physical fitness, and completion of a comprehensive examination in leadership and aerospace education. The award marked the end of the cadet learning phase, and in recognition of the training completed, skills acquired and leadership potential demonstrated, inducted cadet Farrell into the non-commissioned officer corps. Cadet SSgt. Farrell was awarded the citation by Rich Bimber, representing Rep. Rapp's office. Cadet Farrell is the son of Pat and Anne Farrell, Russell, who attended the presentation. Farrell's father, Pat, also serves the squadron as a 2nd Lieutenant and assists with the Aerospace Education program.

NERPA505 Update

Hello 505!  Hope everyone had a great weekend!

(1) Tuesday is Character Development emphasis night.  Cadets need to attend at least one Character Development class per achievement.  The uniform of the day is USAF Class B blues for cadets and blues or the alternate uniform for senior members.  There is always a possibility that we might have visitors, so please be sure your uniforms are complete and you meet appearance standards.
(2) There will be a special presentation during opening formation to recognize one of our cadets for reaching a major achievement.  All cadets are encouraged to be in attendance.  Parents are also encouraged to attend, if possible, to be of support and encouragement to our cadets.  Some snacks and refreshments will be provided.
(3) Members of the Color Guard who were present at the last meeting agreed that they would like to march in the Warren Jaycees 4th of July parade.  Color Guard members should be prepared to practice drill during the meeting.  Capt. Hagberg also informed the squadron that the Color Guard has been invited to participate in the Fireman's Parade at Sheffield.
(4) Cadets and senior members please be sure you have signed off on the monthly safety briefing.  If you have not already done so, go to visit http://www.aetc.af.mil and click on "100 Days of Summer."  The video by Gen. Stephen R. Lorenz, Commander, Air Education and Training Command, USAF,is only a couple of minutes long.
(5) Take advantage of every opportunity to invite people to squadron meetings.  Keep some CAP literature on hand to give to people you meet.  Stay in recruiting mode!  Cadets who recruit two members who complete the application process are eligible to receive the Cadet Recruiting Ribbon.  Senior members must recruit seven qualified members to be eligible for the Senior Recruiting Ribbon.
(6) Cadets and senior members who participate in community service activities should keep track of their time and request a letter verifying their service from the controlling agency.  Accumulating sixty hours of verified community service meets eligibility requirements for the CAP Community Service Ribbon.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!  My apologies for getting this update out so late.  I was out of town and returned this afternoon.

(1) Tuesday is Safety Briefing night.  All member need to be sure they are signed off on the safety briefing to participate in activities other than classroom.  Safety is Job One for all of us.  It would be extremely difficult to "be of service to my community, state and nation" if out of commission due to a preventable accident or injury -- and most are preventable!
(2) Tuesday is also testing night.  Every cadet should try to be prepared to take a leadership or aerospace module.  If you need PT, bring appropriate clothing.  Otherwise, the uniform of the day is BDUs, sleeves up.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!
