Every member of our squadron, senior and cadet, is vitally important to our squadron mission, growth and success. Please take time to be sure you are up to date on safety requirements!
For 505 members who are not subscribed to the PA Wing list server (you should subscribe by clicking here), the following summarizes urgent and important information that came via the PA Wing list server today.
New CAP safety rules are in effect and require every active member to be up to date on monthly and quarterly face-to-face safety briefings. Members who cannot be present for every monthly safety briefing have the option of taking the online safety briefing from their eServices home page (see original email message for instructions - link below).
"Most important: Now that National is tracking safety briefing compliance soon members may find themselves placed inactive and unable to participate in any CAP Activity due to the lack of a current safety briefing. In addition to this any Pilot or ES qualification will also be automatically suspended until they comply."
You can read the original email by clicking here. If you know you are not compliant with safety requirements, please take time to get up to date as soon as possible. If you are not sure if you are compliant, you probably aren't. If you want to know what your status is, check with Capt. Hagberg. Remember, squadron face-to-face safety briefings are scheduled for the first Tuesday meeting of every month. Mandatory Safety Down Day for the squadron for 2010 will be on 5 October.
Sometimes we become lax regarding the responsibilities we accepted when we joined CAP because so much of what we do is routine training - getting ready for those few but all important missions. But, if we do not keep our training up to date, especially safety but including professional development and emergency services, we cannot be called upon to serve during times of emergency when our community, state and nation depend upon each of us to do what CAP volunteers do best.

NERPA505 Update
Hello 505! I hope everyone has enjoyed this great fall weekend! Our thanks go to Squadron 505 for organizing an excellent FTX over the weekend. C/2 Lt. Matheny, C/MSgt. Hagberg, C/A1C Johnson, and I were able to attend.
(1) Tuesday is Emergency Services emphasis. Its time to check and prepare 24 and 72 hour packs for cold weather missions. Cadets Matheny, Hagberg, and Johnson will lead a discussion about the FTX they attended on Saturday. The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) Lt. Fuller will be traveling for the next 3 weeks. We will be able to offer testing only if SM Brown is available. I strongly encourage all cadets to keep up on their studies whether testing is available or not. If you study and review regularly, and also test regularly, you will be surprised how much information you will retain. If you do not study and review regularly, and do not test regularly, you will be amazed at how much information you forget, and you will become discouraged and fail to advance. Please remember your cadet pledge!
(3) Capt. Hagberg plans to take some cadets to a model rocket launch in Erie on Monday evening, 26 September. So far four cadets have expressed interest. If you wish to go, but haven't contacted Capt. Hagberg, please do so immediately. He will let you know when and where he will meet you, or where you can meet him.

NERPA505 Update
Hello 505! I hope everyone had a great week, a wonderful weekend, and is getting ready for an even better week ahead! Please keep an eye on your membership renewal date and don't let your membership laps! You are our squadron's most valuable asset and we need you to remain active!
(1) Tuesday night will be Aerospace Education emphasis night, rather than the regularly scheduled Emergency Services emphasis. The change is due to Lt. Fuller's schedule, and that he has arranged for a former airline pilot to address the cadets this Tuesday night. Lt. Fuller will also teach an Aero. Ed. class. The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) Since this is a 3rd Tuesday, testing will be offered for cadets who are ready.
(3) Fall Open House has been scheduled for Tuesday, 26 Oct. I will have some invitation fliers available at the meeting, and post a PDF copy on the squadron blog to be downloaded if needed. I will also be arranging to visit as many schools as I can between now and then.
(4) Capt. Hagberg has asked if any cadets will be available to assist the Erie Composite Squadron with their Color Guard on 25 Sep. Available cadets should contact Capt. Hagberg as soon as possible.

CAP National Board elects new National Vice Commander

NERPA505 Update
Hello 505! I hope everyone had a great weekend and took time to reflect on the anniversary of 9/11/01. CAP played an important role in recovery from that horrible event, and will continue to be a vital link in the future of our country. When I say "be proud of who you are and what you don in CAP" I couldn't be more serious. I just hope all of you are serious, too.
(1) Tuesday is Character Development emphasis and leadership night. The uniform of the day is USAF style Class B blues, tie or no tie.
(2) Talk up our Wreaths Across America fundraiser. Brochures will be available at the meeting. Let people know I've posted a link to information and an order form on the squadron blog.
(3) Don't forget that all of us, senior members and cadets, are representatives of CAP whether in uniform or out of uniform. When we display the core values of CAP we stand out. Always be in recruiting mode. We owe a big thank you to our core members who keep the squadron alive and well, but we need to continue to grow to replace seniors and cadets who find that CAP is not for them with others who will be committed to being "of service to community, state and nation." If you don't have recruiting material, please ask for some.
(4) It is true that CAP is "the best kept secret in the country" but we don't have to be content to let it remain that way. There is no shortage of glowing news articles about the professionalism and volunteer spirit of CAP members in reports about disaster response and search and rescue. Take a little time to Google CAP yourself. You'll be encouraged.
(5) Things we need to be thinking about and planning for:

Revision to NERPA505 Update
Re. the uniform of the day for Tuesday, 7 Sep 10: Captain Hagberg requests that cadets wear Class B Blues rather than BDUs. The reason is that he will want to take couple of cadets with him during meeting time to do a presentation on the Wreaths Across America program at a local organization. The cadets who accompany him will be brought back to the squadron before dismissal. The Color Guard will also need to practice, including rehearsal of the Missing Man table.

(1) Tuesday night is monthly safety briefing night. We often have safety briefings, but this one is important because it will be logged in the eServices record of everyone who participates. Senior members - please be sure you are current on your safety briefings so you can work with our cadets.
(2) Tuesday is also testing night for those who are ready to test in Leadership, Aerospace, drill, or physical fitness. The uniform of the day is BDUs. Don't forget to bring PT gear.
(3) Mark your calendar! Squadron 503 is still planning to host a SAREX for the weekend of 25-26 September-2010. The SAREX will be held at Capt. Conrad Shearer's house in Cambridge Springs. Please inform Capt. Hagberg or Chaplain Matheny if you plan to attend.
(4) Its not too early to begin planning ahead if you intend to go to the annual Pennsylvania Wing Conference and Banquet on 15-17 October. The Conference and Banquet will be on the 16th, and Wing Commander's Call on the 17th. Its a great opportunity to meet other CAP members and to take part in some important training opportunities.
