NERPA505 Update for the Week of 19 Dec 2010

Hello 505! I hope everyone is enjoying the holiday season and staying warm and safe.  Please keep our Squadron Commander, Capt. Hagberg, in your thoughts and prayers as he recovers from outpatient surgery.  He will not be able to attend the meeting this Tuesday, but we look forward to seeing him next week!  Maj. Brown, our Deputy Commander for Cadets, will be in command.

Now might be a good time to review some good winter driving tips.  Even those of us who are experienced winter weather drivers need to stay sharp to stay safe.  A poster suitable for display at work or school can be found here: http://www.dmv.state.pa.us/pdotforms/misc/Winter_Driving_Tips.pdf.  More helpful information can be found at: http://www.dot.state.pa.us/Internet/pdNews.nsf/WinterHome?OpenFrameset.  A good resource to check before a trip in Pa. is the Pa. Travel Information Page at: http://www.511pa.com/.

(1) Due to the cancellation of the meeting last Tuesday, we will carry over Character Development and leadership emphasis to this Tuesday.  The uniform of the day will be BDUs, but dress as warmly as the weather requires.  If you don't have a field jacket or parka, a warm civilian coat is acceptable.
(2) Testing opportunities may be provided, pending the availability of one of our testing officers.
(3) We'll plan to spend some time discussing things we want to work into the schedule for next year.  Bring some ideas so we can do some brain storming!  We especially need to set a date for our next squadron dinner.
(4) Dates to remember:
  • January 8, Group 6 Commander's Call at New Castle, PA.
  • ? Squadron Dinner (we need to get this scheduled ASAP!)

Cadet and Senior Volunteers Needed to Assist with the Warren County Winterfest

Warren County Winterfest will be 21-23 Jan 11.  The Winterfest organizers have asked if we can help with parking again this year, especially on the most busy day of Saturday, 22 Jan.  This will give cadets and senior members who don't mind being cold and outdoors an opportunity to add to the 60 community service hours necessary for earning the CAP Community Service ribbon.  Hours can also be added by helping distribute Winterfest posters to county businesses.

Cadets and senior members who are interested in helping distribute Winterfest posters and/or assisting with Winterfest parking on 22 Jan, please contact Ch Matheny as soon as possible.  I planned to have the posters at the last meeting, but it was canceled due to severe weather.  If you wish to help with the posters, send an email or contact me at 6886940 and I will drop some off at your home.

Members who assist with parking should plan to wear BDUs and field jacket or parka, or civilian clothing if they have no suitable cold weather uniform.  Warm boots and gloves are essential.  If you do not have a safety vest for directing traffic, let me know and I will lend you one.  Please let me know, too, if you desire to participate and transportation is an issue.  All participants must be up to date on CAP safety briefings.

I have been informed that participation letters for those who served last season will be provided when I pick up the new ones for this season.  Due to an oversight while the Winterfest committee was being reorganized, the letters were overlooked and not issued last year.

NERPA505 Update for the Week of 12 Dec 2010

Hello 505!  Hope everyone's enjoying the snow!  It seems like we're in for a lot of, so we may as well make the best of it and have some winter fun!

"Thanks" to everyone who participated in the Wreaths Across America ceremony on 11 Dec.  We had an excellent turnout from the squadron and made a favorable impression on the visitors who attended.

(1) Tuesday is Character Development and Leadership Night.  The uniform of the day is Class B blues for those who have them.  BDU are appropriate for cadets who do not yet have blues, or corporate uniform for senior members.
(2) Keep an eye on the weather situation.  If a winter weather warning is in effect the meeting will be automatically canceled.  Use good judgment and common sense: if you think conditions that exist during meeting time, and travel to and from, make driving too hazardous, then stay home.
(3) Dates to remember:
  • January 8, Group 6 Commander's Call at New Castle, PA.
  • ? Squadron Dinner (we need to get this scheduled ASAP!)

Update on Squadron Mtg - Thursday, 9 Dec 10

I have been able to confirm that our meeting facility will be available to us at 1830 hrs this evening.  All available members are welcome, but those who wish to participate in the Wreaths Across America ceremony on 11 Dec are especially encouraged to attend.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.

If you have not already done so, please make it a priority to complete the "Introduction to CAP Safety Program for New Members."  It is mandatory that all CAP members complete this safety item.  Go to your eServices account and go down the left column to "Online Safety Education."  If you have completed the Safety Program for New Members, you should still check your safety briefing record to be sure you have been credited.  Members should also complete an additional online safety briefing for the month of December.

Fwd: URGENT UPDATE RE. SQUADRON MEETING & IMPORTANT CAP SAFETY INFORMATION

It seems some addresses were missing from this when I first sent it out!  Sorry!

Subject: URGENT UPDATE RE. SQUADRON MEETING & IMPORTANT CAP SAFETY INFORMATION
To: Update <nerpa505@gmail.com>

Captain Hagberg has directed that the squadron meeting for tonight, 7 Dec 10, be canceled due to persistent inclement winter weather.  Capt. Hagberg has also directed that a make-up squadron meeting will be planned for Thursday, 9 Dec, at 1830 hrs for those who are free to attend.  More information will follow.

Important Safety Information

All squadron members, cadets and senior members, need to be sure they have completed the "Introduction to CAP Safety Program for New Members."  Go to your eServices account and go down the left column to "Online Safety Education."  If you have completed the Safety Program for New Members, you should still check your safety briefing record to be sure you have been credited.

The mandatory quarterly "face-to-face" safety briefing requirement is no longer in effect.  All members need to complete a monthly safety briefing online to be sure that they remain current on CAP safety requirements.  The squadron monthly safety will continue on the first Tuesday of each month so local issues can be dealt with, and activity specific safety briefings will also continue.  The online safety briefing will meet national requirements, but local safety briefings are still vital to safe conduct of unit activities.  Members are not authorized to participate in any organized CAP activity if they are not current and compliant with safety requirements at all levels.

The full CAP Safety Pledge:  "As a Civil Air Patrol member I pledge to promote an uncompromising safety environment for myself and others, and to prevent the loss of, or damage to Civil Air Patrol assets entrusted to me. I will perform all my activities in a professional and safe manner, and will hold myself accountable for my actions in all of our Missions for America."

It is the goal of the senior and cadet staff that our squadron continue with its perfect safety record.

NERPA505 Update for the Week of 5 Dec 2010

Hello 505, from the ice cap on Scandia Road!  We measured 18" at about 3 pm, and a couple of more inches have fallen since then.  This is the second week in row I've gotten this out a day late.  I'll try to get back on track next week.

Congratulations, and welcome to C/AB Mahaney on the approval of his membership to 505!  We look forward to learning and serving community, state and nation together for many years to come.

(1) Weather conditions will determine whether or not we have a meeting tomorrow evening.  If the current warning is canceled or expires the meeting will go as scheduled.  If the warning is extended, the meeting will be canceled in accordance with our squadron safety plan.
(2) The first meeting of the month is Monthly Safety Briefing and testing night.  There are some important changes to the CAP safety program that every squadron member needs to know about.  We're blessed with two excellent testing officers now, so we can expect that testing opportunities and cadet advancements will not be interrupted.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(3) Cadets and senior members who plan to take part in the Wreaths Across America ceremony at 1200 hrs, 11 Dec, will practice.  I want to encourage every available squadron member to either assist or attend the event.  Captain Hagberg has worked hard to plan the event and it is an excellent opportunity to showcase our squadron's talent.  State Rep. Kathy Rapp plans to attend, possibly along with some local officials.
(4) Hopefully, we can take a few minute to talk about plans for our second squadron dinner.
(5) Dates to remember:
  • Saturday, 11 Dec, beginning at 1200 hrs, is the target for laying wreaths on veteran's graves at the Pine Grove Cemetery, Russell.  All cadets and senior members who will be available to participate should notify Capt. Hagberg.
