NERPA505 Update

Greetings from Fort Indiantown Gap!  I hope everyone in 505 had a great weekend!  Those of who attended the Cadet Conference and Dining In have some interesting news to share with you on Tuesday evening.  I'll post a few photos of our trip later.  Thanks to Major Gleming and Capt Fleming for visiting our squadron last Tuesday during our Open House.  Maj. Fleming participated in a promotion ceremony for two cadets and one senior member.  Congratulations to Dillon Farrel on his promotion to C/SSgt and the Wright Brothers Acvhievement.  Congratulations to Evan Matheny on his promotion to C/CMSgt.  Congratulations to Tim Hagberg on his promotion to Captain after serving a full year as squadron commander.  We appreciate the effort that each of you put into the squadron and the CAP!

Thanks to everyone who took the time and made the effort to support our Open House.  We had six visitors, excluding the staff from Group 6.  Two of the visitors expressed interest in joining CAP.

(1) Tuesday is Aerospace Education emphasis night.  The uniform of the day is BDUs, sleeves rolled up.
(2) The training exercise at Hearts Content is less than three weeks away.  I hope everyone is getting squared away for the opportunity.  If you have questions or need information, do not hesitate to ask, and ask soon!
(3) The school year is quickly coming to a close.  Let's all work extra hard to recruit a few more members, cadets and seniors, to fill out our squadron for summer activities.  Make a contact list of everyone you know that you have not talked to yet bout CAP and make it a point to invite them to a meeting.  Let them know what excites you about CAP!
(4) The Wing Encampment at Fort Indiantown Gap is the last week in June.  The application deadline is 3 June, meaning that it has to be at WIng HQ no later than that date.  Hawk Mountain Ranger School is 11-19 July.  Application deadline is 30 June.  Hawk Mountainis optional, but one encampment is necessary before promotion to C/2Lt and the Billy Mitchell Award will be considered.  Cadets who desire to attend need to talk to Lt Hagberg or Capt Matheny as soon as possible.
(5) Chaplain Matheny will be out of town 3-9 May attending a Regional StafF College for Chaplains.

  See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505! Hope everyone had a great weekend! Please be sure that your parents read these updates so they are aware of what we are doing.

(1) Tuesday night is Open House for 505! Its still not too late to invite friends and family to see what CAP is all about. Invite everyone you know! Cadets & seniors should plan to be at the meeting about 30 minutes early to help get organized. We hope that every member of 505 will make an effort to be in attendance! If you want some invitations to pass out at school on Monday, let me know right away and I will drop them off at your school Monday morning.
(2) Lt Hagberg has requested that we have a mix of uniforms, blues and BDUs, at the meeting. Cadets should wear blues only if they have a complete set, including correct insignia, name plate, and shoes. Others may wear BDUs. Sleeves should be rolled up. Since we are expecting our Group Commander, Maj. Fleming, and some of the command staff, all of us should make a special effort to be sure that our uniforms and personal appearances are squared away. We are also expecting visitors from our community, including some representatives from county and city government. This is a great opportunity for us to showcase our squadron in a positive and professional manner! There will also be a promotion ceremony for everyone who is due for a promoton. Let's be sharp on our customs and courtesies!
(3) So far we have 5 members of 505 who have confirmed their plans to participate in the training exercise at Hearts Content on 15-17 May. If you have not already done so, please let me or Lt Hagberg know by Tuesday night if you plan to attend. It is not necessary that you be able to camp overnight, and it is not necessary that you have complete field gear. You will need to have completed the GES 116 exam online, and have a CAPF 101 card. Parents may drop you off and pick you up at the training mission HQ whenever they desire. If you want to train, but cannot camp and do not have transportation, let me know and I will try to arrange transportation for you. Individuals are responsible for bringing their own food and for being appropriately dressed for the weather at the time. If you want to camp, but do not have a tent, it might be possible to team you up with someone. Let me know in advance and I will explore the possibility. Be sure you are signed off on the Monthly Safety Briefing for May or you will not be able to participate. Navigation classes will be taught with map and compass, but cadets or seniors who have a GPS are encouraged to bring it with them.

See you Tuesday!

Training Exercise at Hearts Content 15-17 May

I need to know the following information as soon as possible, hopefully by tomorrow (18 Apr), but no later than 21 Apr, so I can relay it to the individual who is making arrangements with the campground at Hearts Content:

(1) Who plans to attend the Search and Rescue training at Heart's Content on 15-17 May.  (Those who plan to camp may set up on the evening of the 15th or the morning of the 16th.  There will be training on the evening of the 15th if enough people arrive early enough.)

(2) Who plans to set up camp, either on the evening of the 15th or the morning of the 16th.

(3) Who plans to attend, but does not plan to set up camp.

Everyone from 505 is encouraged to participate in the training if at all possible.  Due to funding constraints, this may be the only group training opportunity this year.  Please remember that what we learn is more than theory; our expertise is intended to save lives, and we cannot save lives without expertise.  CAP is credited with saving more than 90 lives nationwide in 2008.  At some future point, someone will be depending on 505.  We have a great group of senior members and cadets with loads of potential.  Let's do our best to be ready.

Please do your absolute best to support our squadron meeting and Open House on 21 Apr.  Please encourage your parents to attend and invite all of your friends.  We will have special guests from our Group 6 Command Staff that you will want to meet.  We will also have snacks and refreshments, and hopefully, a number of important visitors from our community in attendance as well.  By order of Lt Hagberg, you may wear USAF blues if you have complete uniforms, or complete BDUs.  Please do your best to meet uniform and personal appearance standards.  BDU sleeves are to be rolled up.  If you do not know the proper method, it will be demonstrated for you Tuesday evening.  If you have any questions, give Lt Hagberg or me a call.

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!  I hope everyone had a great Easter weekend!

Congratulations are in order for cadet Dillon Farrell who completed requirements for the Wright Brothers Achievement and promotion to C/SSgt.  We appreciate your diligence and effort!  Special thanks to our own Lt Orris and Lt Bill VanEtten, Jamestown Squadron, for an excellent presentation on Fire Safety!  We learned a lot about surviving and escaping a structure fire and appreciate your time and talent!

(1) Tuesday is Character Development emphasis night.  The uniform of the day is USAF blues for cadets and blues or the alternate uniform for seniors.  Cadets need to have participated in at least one Character Development class per achievement in order to be promoted.
(2) Cadets planning to test may do so during the second half of the meeting.  Brief reviews will be made of Aerospace Module 1 and Leadership 2.
(3) 505 will sponsor an Open House on 21 April.  This is a great time to invite friends and family to visit our unit to learn more about what we do.  Lt Hagberg has stated that the cadet who brings the most guests to the meeting will recieve a special prize.  We will also be visited by some the command staff of Group 6 on the same night.  Cadets and senior members need to be sure they are "squared away" in their uniforms and personal appearance.  This will also be a good opportunity to meet and talk to some of our senior leadership.
(4) Be planning ahead for the opportunity to participate in a Search and Rescue training exercise on 15-17 May.  The training wil emphasize ground navigation, but other training will be offered as well.  We should be able to get most of our squadron signed off on Ground Team Member 3 training if they have completed the 116 General Emergency Services test online.  Anyone who has questions, or is having difficulty completing the test online, should inform Lt Hagberg, Lt Orris or Ch (Capt) Matheny.
(5) Finally, if you were not present at the Safety Briefing last week, be sure you read and sign off on the briefing posted on the bulletin board.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!

NERPA 505 Update

Greetings 505! My apologies for not getting this update out in a timely manner. Too many "irons in the fire" this past week.

(1) Tuesday is Safety briefing and Testing night. The uniform of the day is BDUs. Every cadet should be planning to test on either Leadership, Aerospace, or both. If you need PT, bring appropriate clothing and running shoes. Combat boots are not good for running on the gym floor.
(2) This is the last week to register for the Wing Cadet Conference if you plan to attend. Registration forms need to be at Wing HQ by 11 Apr. Parents will need to provide transportation. The cadet conference is not mandatory, except for Cadet Advisory Council representatives.
(3) Be planning ahead for the search and rescue exercise 15-17 May. You will need to have completed the online 116 General Emergency Services exam in order to be issued a 101 card. If you have not completed the exam, let Lt Hagberg or me know and we will work with you in getting it completed.
(4) Stay in recruiting mode! Invite your friends to meetings. Carry literature with you to give to anyone, adult or young person, who shows even a little interest in CAP. Let's do our best to grow by a few more members before summer vacation!
