CAP plays role in finding lost hiker

WISCONSIN -- Twenty-nine ground team members, an aircrew and five Mission Base staffers from the Civil Air Patrol were involved in the successful search for a missing hiker earlier this month. An article published recently by WiscNews.com chronicles the search for 59-year-old Diana Haley, who lost her way while hiking in the Baxter Hollow Preserve in Sumpter, Wisc. Citizen volunteers from CAP's Wisconsin Wing, despite below-freezing temperatures, helped find the woman alive and helped bring her to safety.

Congratulations to Lt. Orris!

Congratulations to 1 Lt. Orris for completing and passing the CAP Senior Officer Correspondence Course!  The course is a professional development requirement for completing Level II for senior members.  Completing Level II requires achieving a technician rating in any specialty track, successfully completing the Senior Officer Course, and completing Squadron Leadership School.  Information on senior member professional development can be found in CAPR 50-17 and at http://members.gocivilairpatrol.com/cap_university/.

NERPA505 Update

(1)  Tuesday is Aerospace Education emphasis.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) Pending the availability of squadron testing officer SSgt. Atwood, testing will be offered for those who need it.  Please review the module you will be testing on.
(3) Maj. Baker, G6 Director of Operations, has informed us that the fall SAREX, originally planned for late October, has been canceled.  A Group 6 will be planned for spring, 2010.
(4) Plan ahead to attend the Group 6 Conference and Banquet on 14 Nov.  It would be great if we could have a good turnout from 505.  Check with Capt. Hagberg or Ch. Matheny for a registration form, or download the one attached to this message.  The RSVP date is 1 Nov.  If cost or transportation is an issue, let me know and we'll try to work something out.  It would be good to know how many from our squadron plan to attend this Tuesday's meeting.
(5) I am scheduled to have a display for the CAP and the squadron at Warren Area High School on 27 Oct., during lunch break.  Those of you who know students attending WAHS can help our recruiting effort by encouraging them to visit the display and pick up some literature.  I am working on getting a visit to Eisenhower Middle/High School confirmed for later in the week.

Stay sharp!  Be proud of who you are and of what you do in CAP!

See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Greetings, 505!  I hope everyone had a great weekend (better than mine, anyway.  I had a virus of some kind.)  Its good to be back home from the PAWG Conference.  Group 6 was well represented, as usual.  I can't speak for the rest of the program, but PAWG chaplain Walters put together an excellent program for chaplains.  Although I still can't figure out what I did to get it, I was honored to receive the PAWG Chaplain of the Year Award.

Capt. Shelley Fleming, who served as Maj. Gary Fleming's Chief of Staff for the past year, was appointed the new Group 6 Commander.  Congratulations, Capt. Fleming!  As was mentioned previously, Maj. Gary Fleming has been appointed to PAWG Vice Commander (West).  Hopefully, we'll receive a report of all of the other awards and commendations.  Capt. and C/SSgt. Hagberg will update us on what transpired during the Wing Commander's Call.

Congratulations are in order to Daniel Hagberg, for completing the Wright Brothers Achievement and promotion to C/SSgt.  Congratulations are also in order to Evan Matheny, for completing the Neil A. Armstrong Achievement.  There is no promotion for this award, but it is the step before the General Billy Mitchell Achievement and promotion to C/2Lt.

(1)  Tuesday is Emergency Service emphasis.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) PT testing will be offered for those who need it, and weather permitting, an opportunity will be offered for the mile run at the Beatty track.  Please remember to bring appropriated exercise and/or running gear.
(3) The word from Maj. Baker, G6 Director of Operations, is that the fall SAREX probably will not take place because of scheduling and authorization problems.  We will keep you up to date as information becomes available to us.
(5) I am scheduled to have a display for the CAP and the squadron at Beatty Middle School on 22 Nov., during lunch break.  Those of you who attend Beatty can help our recruiting effort by encouraging your friends to visit the display and pick up some literature.

Stay sharp!  Be proud of who you are and of what you do in CAP!

See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!

(1) Tuesday is Character Development and leadership emphasis night.  Don't forget to bring your "Flight Logs"!  Remember that cadets need to attend one Character Development session per achievement.  The uniform of the day is USAF blues for cadets and blues or the corporate uniform for senior members.
(2) The Wing Conference and Banquet are coming up next weekend!  The cut-off date to register online is 12 Oct., this Monday.  Be thinking ahead to the Group 6 Conference & Banquet on 14 Nov.  It would be great if we could have a good turnout from 505.  Check with Capt. Hagberg or Ch. Matheny for a registration form, or download the one attached to this message.  The RSVP date is 1 Nov.  If cost or transportation is an issue, let me know and we'll try to work something out.
(3) There still has been no word from Group on when/if we are going to have a SAREX.  I know it's difficult to plan when events are "iffy," but do the best you can to keep 23-25 Oct. and 30 Oct. - 1 Nov. open.  I believe the hold up may be getting a mission number from AFRCC.

Stay sharp!  Be confident in who you are and in what you do in CAP!

See you Tuesday!

[Gp6] Warning about Fraudulent Emails

(Rec'd from Group 6 server)

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has released information warning the public about fraudulent email messages purporting to come from the FBI or the Department of Homeland Security. These email messages contain a malicious attachment that claims to provide an intelligence report or bulletin, but in reality attempts to launch malware on the user's system.

More information regarding these messages can be found in the Federal Bureau of Investigation's New E-Scams and Warnings web site.

To help protect against this type of attack, it is recommending that users avoid opening attachments contained in unsolicited email messages. Additional tips regarding email attachments can be found in the US-CERT Cyber Security Tip - Using Caution with Email Attachments.

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!  Hope everyone had a great weekend and are ready for a great month of activities!

(1) By order of Capt. Hagberg, Tuesday will be our annual "Safety Down Day."  Safety issues that relate to volunteer service in CAP will be the topics of discussion.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) Testing will also be offered to those who are ready.  Our testing officer, SM Atwood, has indicated the he will be available.  Cadets, please study your modules in advance.  If you have questions, or are having problems mastering any of the material, do not hesitate to ask any senior member advanced cadet.  It is in the best interest of all of us that our cadets advance their training and education rapidly, to be of service to community, state, and nation.
(3) The PAWG Conference and Banquet are only two weeks away.  Online registrations will not be accepted after 12 Oct.
(4) The Group 6 SAREX is still planned, but the dates may change from 23-25 Oct. to 30 Oct. to 1 Nov., depending which dates finally get approved for the mission number.  Cadets who desire to attend should inform Capt. Hagberg, Lt. Orris, or Chaplain Matheny.  Those who plan to camp overnight should have sufficient food and gear suitable for the season.
(5) By order of Maj. Fleming, Group 6 Commander, links to The Hock Shop (CAP related gear) can no longer appear on CAP sites due to contractual relationship with Vanguard.  Those who prefer to order from Hock Shop may bookmark the site in their browsers.

Update on WalMart Fundraiser

Its a "Go" for fundraising at WalMart this afternoon (Friday, 2 Oct.) from 3:30 pm until 8:00 pm.  I spoke with the new individual who handles the fundraising applications just a few minutes ago.  She was very gracious and apologized for our paperwork having been mislaid.  She approved our application on the phone.  If you see "Mary Ellen" the next time you visit WalMart, please be sure to thank her.

Please let me know which cadets can show up in front of WalMart at 3:30, and who can come later, and when, for a second shift.  If we have enough cadets, we will try to work two hour shifts.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.  Do not forget to wear your 505 ball cap.  Your uniform is not complete without it.  If you have any questions, call me at 6886940.

Update on Fundraiser at WalMart

I finally received notification from WalMart that our request for time on 2-4 Oct. was not approved. Evidently, the Boy Scouts got their request for 3 & 4 Oct. through just ahead of ours. There is a possibility that we may still be able to get Friday evening, 2 Oct. approved. I will call the personnel manager at WalMart at 7:00 am tomorrow and inquire about the possibility. The manager that I spoke to today said no one else was scheduled for that time frame, so me may still be able to get it. As soon as I know for sure, I'll send out another update. Watch your email tomorrow. If approved, we will still need 3 or 4 cadets in BDUs from about 3:30 until 7:30 or 8:00 pm. Capt. Hagberg received Wing approval for the fundraiser today.
