Winter Storm Warning -- Squadron Meeting Cancellation -- Ground Teams on Standby

Tonight's squadron meeting has been canceled. Maj. Baker, PA Wing Deputy Director of Operations, West, has notified ground teams to be prepared for the possibility of activation due to the coming winter storm.

The National Weather Service in State College, PA, has issued a "...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 6 PM THIS EVENING TO 8 PM EST WEDNESDAY..."

Squadron policy is that normal meetings and activities, with the exception of emergencies, will be canceled in the event of an active Winter Storm Warning issued by the NWS, consequently, the squadron meeting for tonight is CANCELED, by order of Lt. Hagberg, Squadron Commander, 505.

The warning can be read at: http://forecast.weather.gov/MapClick.php?CityName=Warren&state=PA&site=CTP&textField1=41.8437&textField2=-79.144

NERPA505 Update

I apologize for the first incomplete update.  My email program occasionally sends a message prematurely.  One of these days I'll figure out why.  We'll try again.

Greetings!  I hope each of you had a great weekend!  Did you go to Winterfest this year?  It was one of the best that I have ever attended!

This will be another short update.
(1) Tuesday night is Aerospace Education emphasis night.  We will cover a chapter in Aerospace Dimensions with slide show.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(2) a BIG THANK YOU to Lt. Hagberg, C/MSgt Matheny, and C/AB James for working with me at Winterfest this year.  Everyone did a great job and were highly complimented by the organizers.  We have already been asked back next year.  Anytime we can provide such a service to our community is good for the squadron as well as the community.
(3) Congratulations to Jason Peterson for submitting his application for CAP membership last week!  It will be great to have you with 505, Jason!  Jason has been attending meetings regularly for the past several weeks.
(4) Don't forget to sign off on the Monthly Safety Briefing posted on the bulletin board.  I enter your name and CAP ID number in the PA Wing database when you are in compliance with safety, so everybody at Wing knows who is not in compliance.
(5) If you need testing, it will be made available.  Cadets who take CAP seriously can advance about every 60 days.  Those who don't eventually get left behind and ultimately drop out.  Every one of you is important to us and we want you to stay involved!  Don't worry if you've gotten behind, we can help you get back on track.

See you Tuesday!  Semper Vigilans!

NERPA505 Update

I hope everyone weathered the frigid temperatures last week well!  It looks like we're in for a bit of a break.  The mid 20s will seem like a heat wave compared to -10 F!  This will be a short update.

(1) Congratulations to C/AB Blake James, and welcome to 505!  James received his CAPID just a few days ago.  Its up to all of us to make him feel welcome and help him along on his training and achievements.
(2) Tuesday is Emergency Services emphasis night.  Uniform of the day is BDUs.  We are working our way through the Ground Team Leader & Member Reference Text material so it is important that we attend as many meeting as possible so we can get everyone's ES Squadron Training Records (SQTRs) signed off before the next training, or actual, mission.
(3)  Remember to read and sign off on the safety briefing posted on the bulletin board at the meeting facility.
(4) It is likely that we will change meeting nights from Tuesday to Monday, same timeframe, for the 5 weeks following this Tuesday.  I'll give you a final update after the meeting Tuesday night.
(5) If you need testing, come prepared and it will be made available.
(6) Stay in recruiting mode!  Be sure you have literature to give to friends and acquaintances.  We need at least 10 to 15 solid cadets and 2 or 3 more seniors in the first quarter of this year.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

Hello from the ice cap on Quaker Ridge! I hope everyone is having a safe beginning to the New year. It is going to be bitter cold this week, so be sure to take proper precautions against frostbite and hypothermia. Dress in layers and limit the amount of skin exposed to the elements. Do not assume that if you are making a short trip, such as to the store, that you do not need to be properly prepared for cold weather. Most automobile accidents happen within 5 miles of home and there are other reasons you may find yourself exposed to the elements unexpectedly. Some excellent winter driving tips can be found at: http://www.dot.state.pa.us/PENNDOT/Districts/district6.nsf/winter_maint_tips?OpenForm . The squadron meeting will not be cancelled unless there is an active Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service. Nonetheless, use common sense when traveling. If you think it is unsafe to travel, don't!
Maj. Wedge, Group 6 Deputy Commander, has informed us that Maj. Fleming's father's condition is critical. Prayers have been requested for him and his family. HQ has also requested that no emails be sent to Maj. or Capt. Fleming for the time being, and that all messages to G6 HQ be directed to Maj. Wedge or Maj. Baker.

Please print this update and give it to your parents so they can be informed on our activities.

(1) Tuesday, 13 Jan 09, is Character Development emphasis night. Remember that cadets need to have logged at least one CD class per achievement in order to be promoted. C/SSgt. Jon Durnell will be presenting the lesson. The uniform of the day for cadets is Air Force style blues if you have them. If not, BDUs will suffice. Seniors may wear blues or the CAP alternate uniform.
(2) All of us need to be in a constant recruiting mode. Talk to everyone you meet about CAP -- friends, family, classmates, neighbors, etc. Carry some recruiting literature or business cards to distribute or leave in strategic locations. Don't be ashamed to let people know why you made a commitment to CAP membership and what you plan to achieve from it. Remember that the cadet who recruits the most new members will receive a special prize of search and rescue equipment worth at least $20.00.
(3) Winter is a great time for all of us to make some progress on education and achievements. Attend and participate in as many squadron meetings as you possibly can. This will help you keep on track for achievements, keep your skills polished, and encourage your squadron. Invite someone to accompany you to every meeting that you attend. We will regularly cover relevant material in class from either Leadership of Aerospace. The first Tuesday in each month has been reserved for testing, including drill and PT. Since cadets can be promoted every two months, it would be wise to plan your study so you can test on at least two elements, such as Leadership and PT, in the first month, and the remaining two elements, such as Aerospace and drill, is the second month. This would be a very light schedule and easily workable for every cadet. Testing will be made available on other days as time and circumstances allow.
(4) We have been invited to assist again this year with the Warren County Winterfest on 24-25 January. They are asking for four people on both days to help with the sled dog competitions Inform Lt. Matheny if you think you would like to help. Like last year, there might not be a lot to do but our public presence in uniform is a great advertisement for the squadron. Only active cadets who have met monthly safety briefing requirements will be allowed to participate.
(5) Congratulations to Blake James for submitting his application for CAP membership! Welcome to the squadron!

Consult the squadron blog for past announcements and information. I will try to post a few new pictures regularly.

Semper Vigilans! See you Tuesday!

NERPA505 Update

505 Greetings for the New Year! I hope everyone had a safe and fun New Year's Day. We are into our second year as a squadron and still having some growing pains. Thanks to Lt. Hagberg for guiding us through some challenging times last year, and to everyone else for their participaton and cooperation! There are many things each of us can do to help the squadron settle into growth and productivity as we begin 2009.

Congratulations to Evan Matheny for reaching the Charles Lindbergh Achievement and promotion to Cadet Master Sergeant! The Lindbergh Achievement is the second step of the Phase II Leadership phase.

(1) Let's challenge each other, cadets and senior members, to make regular progress on education and achievements. Cadets can make regular achievements about every 60 days with a little effort. It will take a little longer in the officer grades. Take advantage of training experiences at Squadron, Group, and Wing levels. When we have some cadets at officer levels we can start looking seriously at National events. Every cadet, regardless of age, should be shooting for the Billy Mitchell Achievement at a minimum. That is where greater opportunities, including scholarships, begin to open up. We need to have all active cadets and seniors qualified for at least Ground Team Member 3 by summer.
(2) Work on your skill at drill and ceremonies. We will likely have several opportunities to appear in parades during the year. Take your appearance and military bearing seriously. Look sharp. Wear a complete uniform at activities. Polish your courtesies toward peers and senior members. It is appropriate to address cadet and senior officers as Sir or Ma'am.
(3) Talk to everyone we meet about CAP -- friends, family, classmates, neighbors, etc. Carry some recruiting literature or business cards to distribute or leave in strategic locations. Don't be ashamed to let people know why you made a commitment to CAP membership and what you plan to achieve from it.
(4) Get involved in some community service activity and let it be known that you represent the CAP. Cadets and senior members can qualify for the CAP Community Service ribbon after completing 60 hours of verified community service.
(5) Attend and participate in as many squadron meetings as you possibly can. This will help you keep on track for achievements, keep your skills polished, and encourage your squadron. Invite someone to accompany you to every meeting that you attend.
(6) We have a tentative invitation to assist with the Warren County Winterfest on 24-25 January. Inform Lt. Matheny if you think you would like to help. Like last year, there might not be a lot to do but our public presence in uniform is a great advertisement for the squadron.
(7) This Tuesday is Mandatory Safety Briefing day and Testing day. The uniform of the day is BDUs. The safety briefing is necessary for all activities except clasroom. Written, drill and PT testing will be made available to those who desire them. Cadets who are qualified for an achievement should not miss a testing opportuinty. Remember that you can improve your scores by taking the practice tests on the following sites until you can pass them without failing: http://www.cadetstuff.org/archives/.html#
(for Leadership) and http://mdln.hws.edu/cap/modules/index.asp (for Aerospace Dimensions). Be sure to work on the Cadet Pledge and the Honor Code.
(8) CAP uniform items and acccessories can be ordered at the following: http://www.vanguardmil.com/ and http://www.thehock.com/ . It might be worth your time to check out some military surplus stores and Web sites as well.
(9) I hope everyone received the notification about Maj. Fleming's father being sent to a Pittsburg hospital after suffering injuries from a fall on the ice. Let's keep him and his family in our prayers. (Maj. Fleming is Group 6 Commander).
(10) Cadets who have questions can feel free to address them to C/MSgt. Evan Matheny at evan.cap505@gmail.com or C/SSgt. Jon Durnell at jondurnell@yahoo.com.

Semper Vigilans! See you Tuesday!
