NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!  I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful weather.  More importantly, I hope everyone took time this Memorial Day to reflect in gratitude on the service that our military, past and present, has rendered to all of us.  Let us be especially thankful for those who gave their lives in our service, and for those who are laying their lives on the line for us today, even as I write.  May we never take for granted the freedoms that we enjoy, or the God who gave us those freedoms, and may we never be neglectful of the responsibilities that freedom brings to each of us.

(1) Our Color Guard did a fine job representing 505 during the Russell Jubilee.  Some pictures will be posted on nerpa505.blogspot.com, thanks to John and Susan Montour.  Additional photos can be viewed at http://cu.timesobserver.com/pages/gallery.php?gallery=299893.  Thanks too, to Maj. Chuck Wedge for arranging for us to borrow the Group 6 van to use in the parade.
(2) Tuesday night is Aerospace Education emphasis night.  We will cover a module in Dimensions and, if time allows, discuss some current events.  The uniform of the day is BDUs.
(3) Reprinted from the last Update: All of us need to work harder on recruiting. We stand to lose a few more inactive members over May and June. We do not want to lose anyone, but sometimes people find CAP not to be for them, or drop out for other reasons. We must maintain no less than 16 members to hold on to our squadron charter. Our current total membership is now at the minimum. Our Group Commander understands how hard it is to grow, but if we get too low, and stay too low, he has the discretion to deactivate our squadron. I hope we all share the commitment to not allow that to happen.  School will be out very soon.  If you know anyone who might be interested in joining our squadron, now is the time to invite them to a meeting.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!

Update for Russell Jubilee

Lineup for the Russell Jubilee parade will begin at 1000 hrs. at the Russell Elementary School parking lot.  Color Guard members, C/CMSgt. Matheny, C/A1C Hagberg, C/A1C Peterson, and C/A1C Matheny, should do their best to be there at 1000 hrs. sharp to complete their setup and practice as needed.  The Color Guard uniform is USAF Class B Blues.  Please be sure your uniform is complete, including name plate, grade insignia, USAF belt, and flight cap with device.  Ribbons should be worn if you have them.  Shoes should be polished to a high shine.  I will have a shoeshine kit with me for touch ups.  Remember, our Color Guard (and all of us when in uniform) represents our squadron, the CAP and the USAF.  A lot of people will be looking at us, so we need to be look and act sharp!

Color Guard gear will be in the CAP van at the parade staging area.  Look for a large, white Ford van with CAP seal on the driver and passenger doors.  There will also be plenty of water in the van.

Cadets who are not in the Color Guard may ride in the CAP van, or walk along the parade route to help distribute literature and treats.  Wear USAF Class B Blues if you have them, or BDUs if you do not have blues.  Families members who bring cadets are invited to walk along the parade route to help distribute literature and treats as well, if they wish.  Please dress in good taste so as not to distract from the dignity of the Color Guard.

A display and information table will be set up in the truck bay at the Russell Fire Hall after the parade.

Call Capt. Hagberg or me if you have questions.  If you need a ride to and from the parade, let us know and we will try to arrange it.

Semper Vigilans!  See you there!

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505! Here's hoping everyone had a great weekend! I know everyone who was able to attend the Field Training Exercise did. It was a great, though sometimes wet and cold, experience. Check out some of the photos on the blog! There is also a brief, but good, front-page article in the 18 May Warren Times Observer about our participation in the FTX. If you do not get the WTO, the Internet link for the article is: http://www.timesobserver.com/page/content.detail/id/516654.html?nav=5006
.

Congratulations are in order to cadets Daniel Hagberg and Collin Matheny for the Gen. Hap Arnold award and promotion to C/A1C! Cadet Hagberg was promoted on 8 May, and Matheny on 14 May.

(1) Tuesday is the last meeting before the Russell Jubilee on 23 May. SM Atwood requests that all cadets involved in the Color Guard be ready to drill at 1830 hours sharp. The Russell Jubilee will be our first opportunity to showcase our Color Guard, and it will be a great opportunity for our squadron. Hopefully, we will have a CAP van to follow the Color Guard in the parade. We also need a few people to walk along the parade route to distribute treats and information. We will have a display table set up in the fire hall. Anyone who would like to volunteer to attend the table, please let me know and we will work out a schedule. All those walking in the parade need to be at the Russell Elementary School parking lot by 1000 hrs. All squadron members who have uniforms should be in them, blues for cadets, and be in compliance with grooming standards.
(2) Tuesday is also Emergency Services emphasis night. We will plan to cover at least one more chapter in the Ground Team manual. Uniform of the day is BDUs, sleeves rolled up.
(3) All squadron members who plan to participate in the parade need to be sure they have signed off on the monthly safety briefing.
(4) All of us need to work harder on recruiting.

We are appreciative of all of our members and their families, and of all of the support that our families give. Thank you!

CADETS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO ASK YOUR PARENTS TO READ THE SQUADRON UPDATES SO THEY CAN KEEP INFORMED OF OUR ACTIVITIES AND PLANS. PARENTS, PLEASE REMEMBER TO INFORM YOUR CADET(S) OF THESE UPDATES SO THEY WILL BE REMINDED OF ACTIVITIES.

Semper Vigilans! See you Tuesday!

Update on FTX

It seems that the drinking water is not yet turned on at Hearts Content.

Be sure to bring your own drinking water. We may be able to make runs for refills if necessary.

The Clarion squadron plans to supply 125 gallons of water for non drinking personal use and cleaning cooking utensils.

Remember your flashlights, extra batteries, compass, etc., & GPS if you have one. If you have questions, now's the time to contact me or Capt Hagberg. If more news becomes available I will post another update.

The training that we have done in house has been added to cadets' records who have completed the General Emergency Services 116 test. Please print new 101 cards. The qualifications section should now show *GTM3. The asterisk indicates "in training". If you cannot print your 101 card, let me know and I will print one for you. Some have already asked me to do so.

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505! Are you ready for the field training exercise at Hearts Content on 15-17 May?

(1) Congratulations to Jason Peterson on his achievement of the Hap Arnold Award and promotion to C/SrA! Great job Jason!
(2) Tuesday is Character Development night. The uniform of the day is USAF blues for cadets and blues or the alternate uniform for senior members. Remember that cadets need to attend at least one Character Development class per achievement.
(3) Bring whatever Emergency Services field gear that you have to the meeting Tuesday night. Equipment inspection is an item that needs to be signed off on ES Squadron Training Records, and we need to know who is prepared enough to be called on in an emergency.
(4) Plan ahead to attend the Russell Memorial Day Parade on 23 May. We plan to have a Color Guard in the parade, and will need some walkers to distribute information along the parade route. We will also need attendants at the display table in the fire hall. Everyone who can attend will be needed and appreciated!
(5) Don't forget to sign off on the Monthly Safety Briefing on the bulletin board.

NERPA505 Update

Greetings 505!  I hope everyone is having a great weekend!  My trip to the Staff College has been canceled.  I was informed last night that somehow my registration had been misplaced.  It is a bit disappointing not to be able to go, but I'm glad I won't have to miss any squadron meetings.

(1) Tuesday is testing night.  The uniform of the day is BDUs, sleeves rolled up.  Bring appropriate clothing for PT.  If the track is available at Beatty, we will plan to go there for PT.  Take some time Monday to review your study material.  If you have time, do the practice tests on the Internet.  If you have lost the links, let me know and I will send them again.
(2) Tuesday is also Safety Briefing night.  Everyone, cadets and senoirs, have to be signed off on the safety briefing in order to participate in any activity other than classroom.
(3) If time is available, we will also spend some talking about the upcoming training opportunity at Hearts Content.  Some of the basic equipment that you should try to get together would include 2 canteens, a compass, a whistle, food for the time you plan to stay, enough clothing to keep warm, dry and clean, and to change into if you get wet, tent and sleeping gear if you plan to stay overnight.  The uniform will be BDUs.  Non-military clothing is acceptable if needed to keep warm and dry.  We'll talk about this more at the next 2 meetings.  If you are not able to get the equipment together for some reason, come anyway and learn what you can.  I may be able to come up with some extra gear if there is a need.
(4) I have been in contact with the orgainzers of the Russell Memorial Day Parade.  They want us to return again this year.  They have also offered us a spot to set up an informational display in the fire hall.  Those who plan to participate in the parade need to plan ahead.  Last year, our cadets won Best Marching Unit.
(5) We're here to help you take advantage of everything that CAP has to offer.  Set goals.  Ask questions.  Be eager to learn, and learn from your mistakes.

Semper Vigilans!  See you Tuesday!
